Cost allocation of VMs on Dedicated Servers

Cost allocation of VMs on Dedicated Servers

Cloud8 supports technical usage sharing for VMs running on dedicated servers.

Case of use :

Those who use VMs on a dedicated server cannot know the individual cost of the VMs because Oracle only informs the total cost of the dedicated server. The individual cost is important for showback, tag chargeback, as well as pricing and comparing VMs on dedicated servers with cloud models.

How does it work?

  • For each daily cost line of the dedicated servers – CPU and Memory – we make the allocation to the virtual machines that are on this server;
  • For the tags , we assume the BootVolume tags  since OCI does not provide this information;
  • The dedicated server cost is in the line “ Compute -> Compute – Dedicated ”;
  • The cost of VMs is in a new line “ Compute -> Compute – Instances on Dedicated ”;
  • 2 new cost lines are generated: CPU and Memory for the VM;
  • The calculation is made proportional to CPUs and Memory;
  • The cost in “ Components -> Servers ” is consistent and will appear in other tools such as Inventory and Pivot Table ;
  • The cost that remains in “ Compute – Dedicated ” is the ‘leftover’ cost, that is, all the CPU (or Memory) was allocated, but one of the dimensions was left over. It is a good indicator to know if the server is being 100% utilized ;
  • The invoice is the same as the original with the same SKUs

To keep an eye on : We apply the costs to all servers that are in this dedicated pool, regardless of whether the VM is on or off.

For now, enabling is done on demand (by customer request) as it is not OCI standard. This is another exclusive Cloud8 feature that adds value, and will soon be available directly through the Cloud8 Panel .
